The Big Mac was created by Jim Delligatti, an early Ray Kroc franchisee, who was operating several restaurants in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Big Mac is now a hamburger sold by the international fast food restaurant chain, McDonald's.

The Big Mac had two previous names, both of which failed in the marketplace. At first, it was called, The Aristocrat, which consumers found difficult to pronounce. Second, it was named the Blue Ribbon Burger. The third name, Big Mac, was created by Esther Glickstein Rose, a 21-year-old advertising secretary.

The Big Mac was introduced in the metropolitan area of Pittsburgh in 1967 and nationwide in 1968. The name was popularized by a 1974 advertising campaign featuring a list of the ingredients in a Big Mac: "Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – on a sesame seed bun."

Originally, it was designed to compete with Big Boy restaurants' Big Boy sandwich. Today, the Big Mac is known worldwide and is often used as a symbol of American capitalism.
