James Drury played "The Virginian" in the series of the same name from 1962 -1971.

Drury was born in 1934, in New York City, where his father James, Sr., was a New York University professor. He grew up in both New York and Oregon. After numerous smaller roles in film and on TV he was cast as the tough foreman of the Shiloh Ranch, who went only by the name "The Virginian". The Virginian's real name was never revealed in the nine years the show was on the air.

The series was immensely successful, it ran for nine seasons—television's third longest running western, behind Bonanza at 14 seasons, and Gunsmoke at 20 seasons.

James Drury is now 82 and lives in Houston, Texas.
