Unbelievably, it was actually President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who snubbed Jesse Owens after his spectacular performance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Owens had won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics for the long jump, the 100 meters, the 200 meters, and the 4x100 meter relay.

Upon the US Olympic Team's return to the US, Roosevelt held a State Reception for them, but excluded the black members of the team, because 1936 was an election year, and FDR did not want to appear soft on the "Negro Issue."

Actually, Hitler met with and shook hands with Jesse Owens at the German Chancellery, just after the Olympics. Pictures were taken, and Owens proudly displayed the picture to German Journalists who had written that Hitler snubbed him.

The picture was never published, but talked about frequently by another Olympian, a German relay runner in the 1936 Olympics, Waither Tripps. He stated that Hitler greeted all the Olympic winners at a reception at the Reich Chancellery, shaking each and everyone's hand for their performance, including Jesse Owens.

Winston Churchill and Charles DeGaulle never had the opportunity to meet or snub Jesse Owens.
