The famous writer who lived at the home of Ralph Waldo Emerson and served as his handyman, gardener, and literary protégé, first from 1841 until 1844, then again from 1847 to 1848 was Henry David Thoreau. While he was with Emerson, Thoreau often helped to edit and contribute poetry and prose to the transcendentalist magazine, 'The Dial'.

Henry David Thoreau was born in July 1817, in Concord, Massachusetts. He began writing nature poetry in the 1840s, while he was with the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson was the man who Thoreau knew as a great mentor and friend.
