Australia's first appearance at the Winter Olympic Games was at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Australia sent one athlete, Kenneth Kennedy.

Australian Frederick McEvoy captained the British bobsleigh team, and carried Britain's flag in the opening ceremony. The 4-man team won bronze, and the 2-man team came fourth.

Turkey, Greece, Liechtenstein and Bulgaria also competed at the Winter Games for the first time in 1936.

The one and only athlete, Kenneth Kennedy competed in the Speed Skating event, reaching a highest finishing ranking of 29th in the 500m sprint with a time of 47.4 seconds to complete the distance.
