Lee Harvey Oswald (October 18, 1939 - November 24, 1963) enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 24, 1956 just after his 17th birthday. Since he was underage, his brother Robert, Jr. was required to sign the forms as his legal guardian. His primary training in the Marines was as a radar operator.

Oswald was first court-martialed after he accidentally shot himself in the elbow with an unauthorized .22 caliber handgun. He was court-martialed a second time for fighting with a sergeant who Oswald thought was responsible for his punishment in the shooting incident.

He was later punished for a third incident but not court-martialed while he was on a night-time sentry duty in the Philippines. He inexplicably fired his rifle into the jungle. On September 11, 1959, he received a hardship discharge from active service, claiming his mother needed care. He was placed on the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Oswald assassinated U.S. President John Kennedy on November 22, 1963 shooting from the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository as the President traveled by motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Five government investigations concluded he acted alone but conspiracy theories remain.

After his arrest and multiple interrogations at the Dallas Police Headquarters, he was to be transported to the city jail. En route, in the basement, Oswald was shot once in the stomach by Jack Ruby while being escorted. He died late that day.
