Who as an English celebrity in the 1920s said, "I married beneath me. All women do."?
Nancy Astor, a 20th century English politician and person known for her sharp wit, made the statement, "I married beneath me. All women do." It is believed that she first used the words during a public press conference (interview).
Lady Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor, (May 19, 1879 – May 2, 1964) was the first woman to be seated as a Member of the British Parliament. She was an American born English socialite who made a second marriage to Waldorf Astor as a young woman in England. When her husband was elevated to the House of Lords, she ran and in 1919 started serving in the British Parliament as a representative of the Conservative Party for Plymouth Sutton until 1945, when she was persuaded to step down. She subsequently led a life with less popularity and became extremely isolated.
In 1964, Lady Astor died at her daughter's home at Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire. She was cremated and her ashes interred at the Octagon Temple at Cliveden.
