Theresa Mary May (born October 1, 1956 in Eastbourne, England) assumed the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on July 13, 2016. She succeeded David Cameron who resigned when the referendum on the UK's continuing membership in the European Union (he supported "stay" in the EU) was rejected by the majority of the voters who preferred to "leave" the EU. She has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Maidenhead since 1997. May identifies as a One-Nation Conservative and is characterised as a liberal Conservative.

She is the second woman to hold the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Margaret Thatcher was the first, serving from 1979 to 1990.
