While Henry Ford certainly played a major role in getting America on wheels he did not build the first automobile in the USA. That award goes to the Duryea Brothers, Charles & Frank, who on September 20, 1893 rolled their converted horse drawn buggy out onto the roads of Springfield, MA for its first road test.

There were actually a number of early automobile pioneers who predate Mr. Ford; for instance, Ransom E Olds was the first to mass produce the automobile when in 1901 his famous "Curved Dash" hit the streets.
