Who created the America's Cup with a deed of gift for a trophy to New York Yacht Club?
In 1851 in England, John Cox Stevens and his ownership syndicate raced in the 100 Pound Guinea Cup on America, a beautiful schooner. They won the event, sold the boat and brought the trophy to New York Yacht Club. The deed of gift said the trophy would be a "perpetual challenge cup for a friendly competition between nations". Harold Vanderbilt was a successful defender of the Cup and Sir Thomas Lipton was a beloved, but unsuccessful challenger.
