The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, is the most well-known poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It was published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads, the premiere compendium of the English Romantic shift in literature.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner describes the experiences of a sailor who has reached land after a long sea voyage. The Mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony who begins to listen to the story. The wedding attendee's reaction turns from bewilderment to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's tale builds. Coleridge offers a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner was made into a silent film in 1925 starring Clara Bow. It was also made into a major motion picture in 1975 featuring Michael Redgrave.
