Sir William Wallace defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297. Later, he was appointed Guardian of Scotland in 1297. He served as guardian until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298. In August 1305, Wallace was captured in Robroyston, near Glasgow, and handed over to King Edward I of England. The king had him hanged, drawn, and quartered for high treason and crimes against both the English crown and people of England. He was 35 years old when he was killed.

Wallace was a Scottish knight who along with Andrew Moray became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence. These Wars were a series of military campaigns fought between the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
