William Cropper was a cricket and football player who at the age of 26 succumb to a sport's injury on January 13, 1889. He was known for his excellent play as a keen professional sports cricket player for Derbyshire and for being selected for an England XI against the touring Australians in 1888. He also played football for a variety of clubs, including one appearance for Derby County in the FA Cup in 1886. This caused him to become one of nineteen people to do the “Derbyshire Double.”

Beginning in 1888 Cropper played football for the Derbyshire side of Staveley F.C. While playing for Staveley in January 1889 against Grimsby Town at Clee Park (Lincolnshire), Cropper collided with Dan Doyle, the Grimsby right-back. Cropper was badly injured by Doyle's knee in his abdomen. He left the field several minutes later in obvious distress. The collision had actually resulted in a ruptured bowel, and Cropper died in the dressing room at Grimsby. He was with his Staveley and Derbyshire CCC teammate, George Hay.
