Who established the first police crime laboratory?
In 1910, Edmond Locard (December 1877 – April 1966), professor of forensic medicine at the University of Lyons, France, established the first police crime laboratory. He was a pioneer in forensic science who became known as the "Sherlock Holmes of France". He formulated the basic principle of forensic science: "Every contact leaves a trace". This became known as Locard's exchange principle.
Locard succeeded in persuading the Police Department of Lyon in 1910 to give him two attic rooms and two assistants, to start what was considered the very first police crime laboratory in existence.
