The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, has been historically linked as the cause of "The War to end all war" known also as World War I, or The Great War.

On Sunday, 28 June 1914, at about 10:45 am, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were shot and killed in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina, by Gavrilo Princip, 19 at the time, a member of Young Bosnia and one of a group of assassins organized and armed by the Black Hand.

Princip's weapon was the pocket-sized Fabrique Nationale FN Model 1910 pistol chambered for the .380 ACP cartridge provided him by Serbian Army Colonel and Black Hand member Dragutin Dimitrijević.

The assassination led to events that culminated in The Great War in less than two months, beginning with Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia.
