Who invented the first modern automobile?
The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is considered to be the first automobile in history and the prototype of modern vehicles we see every day. It was constructed by German inventor Karl Benz in 1886. It was put in motion by an internal combustion engine, and the price of the first car was $1,000 (equivalent to today's $26,337).

If the question was who built the first automobile I would agree with your answer. But when you add modern to the question it should be Ford.
