Molotov cocktail is an improvised bottle-based incendiary device filled with flammable liquid and with a means of ignition. It is also known as poor man's grenade, petrol bomb or simply bottle bomb. The production of similar grenades was organized by Vyacheslav Molotov during World War II and the Winter War (the 1939-1940 war between the Soviet Union and Finland). The popular term was coined by the Finns, as an insulting reference to Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov.

When the hand-held bottle firebomb was developed to attack Soviet tanks, the Finns called it the "Molotov cocktail", as "a drink to go with the food". Molotov himself despised the name, particularly as the term became ubiquitous.
