The Buland Darwaza, or the Gateway of Magnificence, was built by the third Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1601, as the entrance to the city of Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra in India. On this gateway was inscribed the following words in Persian:" Isa, the son of Mary said, 'The world is a bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it. He who hopes for a day, may hope for eternity; but the world endures but an hour. Spend it in prayer for the rest is unseen.'" Isa is the name for Jesus Christ in Islamic sources.

The passage is important because of its absence in Biblical sources. Akbar, despite being a Muslim by birth, was known for his interest in all the major religions of the world. He is remembered for his liberal attitudes towards his Hindu subjects. He organized and participated in philosophical and theological discussions with learned scholars of all faiths. It is not surprising that he had a deep understanding and respect for Christ whose remark ended up on one of Akbar's magnificent constructions.
