Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was a Baptist Minister & social activist who played a key role in the American Civil Rights movement from the mid 1950s until the late 1960s. King was inspired by Mahatma Gandi and other advocates of nonviolence. He called for equality for African Americans through peaceful protests. During his active social life King was jailed about 30 times, mostly on trumped-up charges. The life of this outstanding man suddenly closed in 1968, when he was assasinated.
