The statue in the Statuary Hall collection depicts Will Rogers and was donated by Oklahoma. He was born November 4, 1879, in Oolagah, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, before Oklahoma achieved statehood. His death occurred August 15, 1935, in a plane crash in northern Alaska along with aviator Wiley Post. His tomb is located in the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, OK. He was a stage and motion picture actor, author, vaudeville performer, newspaper columnist as a humorist and satire writer. One of the earliest political satirist, he ran a mock Presidential campaign in 1928, as a member of the Anti-Bunk Political Party. Of the many campaign interviews that he conducted, his answers were spur of the moment and reflected his quick wit. Evidenced in one question: "What does the farmer need?". Response - "He needs a punch in the jaw if he believes either of the parties cares a damn about him after the election." (August 23, 1928) He was particularly loved for his vaudeville and rodeo shows in which his handling of a rope was quite legendary. Many videos of his skill can be found online even today. He was an inspiration for Bob Hope in the manner of his own approach to on stage political satire.
