Eric Robert Rudolph was responsible for the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, July 27, 1996, during the Summer Olympics.

Richard Jewell, a security guard, discovered a military ALICE Pack, and alerted Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Jewell and other security guards began clearing the area so that a bomb squad could investigate the package. The bomb detonated before all spectators could leave, killing Alice Hawthorne and wounding 111 others.

Jewell was temporarily investigated as a suspect. In October 1996, he was exonerated when the FBI declared that he was no longer a person of interest.

After three more bombings in 1997, Rudolph was identified by the FBI as the suspect from tips from two witnesses, seeing Rudolph departing the scene noting his appearance and truck license plate.

He became the 454th fugitive listed by the FBI on the Ten Most Wanted list. The FBI considered him to be armed and extremely dangerous, offering a $1 million reward for information leading directly to his arrest. Rudolph eluded capture for more than five years disappearing into the rugged southern Appalachian Mountains.

In 2003, he was arrested and tried before being convicted two years later. Rudolph was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for his crimes. In his 2005 statement, he stated he wanted to force the cancellation of the Olympics, because he believed the government sanctioned "abortion on demand".
