Cynthia Lillian Powell (9/10/39 – 4/1/15), originally of Blackpool, Lancashire, England, took her husband’s surname when she became Cynthia Lennon, first wife of John Lennon, who established the Quarrymen, which morphed into the Beatles. Ms. Powell met Mr. Lennon when they both studied at the Liverpool College of Art. The two were married on August 23, 1962, after they discovered that she was pregnant with the child they would name John Charles Julian Lennon.

Eight years later, Cynthia Lennon obtained a divorce from John on the grounds of adultery; he had left his wife and young son for Conceptual Artist Yoko Ono, whom he had impregnated. She was married to Italian Hotel Magnate Roberto Bassanini from 1970 to 1973 and Engineer John Twist of Lancashire from 1976 to 1983. She became the partner of Liverpool Chauffeur Jim Christie—who became her business manager—for 17 years; they lived on the Isle of Man and in Normandy, France. She was the wife of Noel Charles, owner of a nightclub in Barbados, from 2002 until he passed away on March11, 2013.

Ms. Lennon published a book of memoirs, “A Twist of Lennon”, in 1978 and a biography of her first husband, “John”, in 2005. She opened, ran, and eventually sold “Oliver’s Bistro” and bed-and-breakfast in Ruthin, Wales. She relocated to Majorca, Spain, on the death of Noel Charles and lived there until her death, following a short bout with cancer. Julian was with her at the end.
