Who is Satyendra Nath Bose?
Satyendra Nath Bose was an Indian mathematician and physicist, who is well known as the person whose name is associated with bosons, the force-carrying particles of the Universe. He is best known for his work in quantum mechanics in the 1920s. He worked with Albert Einstein in developing the statistics and theory of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The class of elementary particles that obey the Bose-Einstein statistics are called bosons, a name given by Paul Dirac. Examples of Bosons are photons, gluons that hold quarks together and the theoretical graviton. The recently discovered Higgs boson is also an example.
A man of many interests, Bose was fluent in many languages and was also involved with the night schools in Calcutta, which later came to be known as the Working Men's Institute. He could also play music on the "esraj," a stringed instrument similar to the violin.
