Buster Poindexter was born David Roger Johansen to a librarian mother and opera singer-turned-insurance salesman on January 9, 1950 in Staten Island, New York. Professionally, he sings, acts, plays harmonica, and writes music.

In the late 1960s, as David Johansen, he was lead singer of the Vagabond Missionaries. Later, he wrote and sang for the protopunk New York Dolls, who released albums “New York Dolls” in 1973 and "Too Much Too Soon," in 1974. The Dolls were a critical success but commercial failure. In 1977, he started a solo career and, in 1982, opened for the mega-hit British rock-and-roll band, The Who.

In the late 1980s, Johansen’s alter-ego, Buster Poindexter, collaborated with the Uptown Horns to perform music that fused lounge and jazz with Calypso, as well as “novelty” songs. He appeared on television’s “Saturday Night Live,” and gave Johansen his first hit song, a cover of Arrow’s “Hot Hot Hot.”

Johansen’s first film was “Up the Academy.” Poindexter playedthe joking cab driver in “Scrooged,” the Bill Murray comedic take on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Johansen/Poindexter has been active in music, TV, and film through 2016 and into 2017.

Son of Sam was the alias of serial killer David Berkowitz. Professional Wrestler Mark William Calaway is best known as "The Undertaker." Comic boom characters Luke Cage, Erik Josten, and Victor Alvarez all bore the Power Man moniker.
