Born Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, St. Bernadette of Lourdes (1844 – 1879) was the firstborn daughter of a miller from Lourdes, France, and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. She had apparitions of the Virgin Mary throughout her lifetime. On 29 July 1866, she took the religious habit of a postulant and joined the Sisters of Charity in Nevers. She eventually died of her long-term illness at the age of 35 on 16 April 1879. Bishop Gauthey of Nevers and the Church exhumed the body of Bernadette Soubirous on 22 September 1909, in the presence of representatives appointed by the Church. They claimed that her body appeared incorrupt - preserved from decomposition. She was exhumed again in 1919 and 1925, and a minute amount of mildew was noted on her skin on both occasions. Wax masks were placed on her face and hands in 1925 to conceal the blackish tinge of her skin, and her remains were placed in gold and crystal reliquary in a chapel in Nevers.
