The Hare Krishna movement was started in 1966 in New York City by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who came from India on a steamship boat. This movement became famous in the 60's and 70s through their chanting and dancing on the streets of major cities around the world (such as New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Melbourne, Bombay) and they were also notably visible in various airports and shopping malls distributing their books such as "Bhagavad-gita, 'As It Is'". Prabhupada left behind 108 temples which he established from 1966 thru 1977. Now there are more than 550 centers, including 60 farm communities, some aiming for self-sufficiency, 50 schools, and 90 restaurants.
