Ten people have been officially named as honorary members of the Harlem Globetrotters. They include: Kissinger (1976), Bob Hope (1977), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1989), Whoopi Goldberg (1990), Nelson Mandela (1996), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1999), Pope John Paul II (2000), Jesse Jackson (2001), Pope Francis (2015), and Robin Roberts (2015).

The only basketball player that is a member of the 'Ten Honorary Harlem Globetrotters' is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Globetrotters offered Abdul-Jabbar a reported $1 million to play basketball for them back in 1969, but he declined and went on to become the first pick in the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft that year. They eventually added him to the lineup as an honorary member.

Abdul-Jabbar (born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr., April 16, 1947) is an American former professional basketball player who played 20 seasons in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers. During his career as a center, Abdul-Jabbar was a record six-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), a record 19-time NBA All-Star, a 15-time All-NBA Team member, and an 11-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. He was a member of six NBA championship teams as a player and two more as an assistant coach, and was twice voted NBA Finals MVP. He is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, often named a top 3 player in NBA history. He has been called the greatest basketball player of all time by NBA players Pat Riley, Isiah Thomas, and Julius Erving.
