Who is the only Indian writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature?

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. The Nobel Foundation said the award was given to him "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West". He is the only writer from India to win the Nobe Prize for Literature so far. His widely-acclaimed book, Gitanjali (Song Offerings), was first published in 1910 in Bengali. A collection of mystical and devotional songs, Gitanjali was translated into English in 1912. His works include eight novels and four novellas, around 1,000 poems, 2,000 songs and a large number of short stories.
