For Best Actor in a Supporting Role Alec Guinness received an Oscar nomination in the film, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). Guinness played Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the film. His performance won him worldwide recognition and fame. It brought particular acclaim to his character, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character was a critical part of the film, and in several subsequent films the persona in some way is still used or mentioned.

In 1977 it was reported that Guinness was one of the few actors in the film who believed that it would be a success. Because of his belief, he negotiated a deal for 2% of the one-fifth gross royalties paid to George Lucas. This made him quite wealthy in later life. Also, he agreed to take the part of Kenobi on the condition that he would not have to do any publicity to promote the film.

Lucas credited him with inspiring the cast and crew to work harder, saying that Guinness contributed significantly to the fact that the film was completed as required. Harrison Ford said, "It was, for me, fascinating to watch Alec Guinness. He was always prepared, always professional, always very kind to the other actors. He had a very clear head about how to serve the story [Star Wars]."

However, since Guinness reportedly hated working on Star Wars so much, Guinness himself claims that Obi-Wan's death was his idea as a way to limit his role in this film and any other movie. Guinness disliked fame which followed work he did not hold in high esteem.
