The United Nations Secretary-General is Mr. Ban Ki-moon. Under the charter, the Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendations of the security council.

Ban Ki-moon's, (Korea) tenure in office featured emphasis on climate change policy, efforts to mitigate surging prices of both energy and food in the developing World.

He has inherited a portfolio concerning issues on nuclear nonproliferation negotiations with Iran and efforts to solidify the U.N. role in Sudan's Darfur conflict. Prior to serving as U.N. Secretary-General. Ban was South Korea's Foreign Affairs and trade Minister from 2004 until 2006. He has also been involved with issues concerning inter Korean relations(North Korea).
