Alicia Augello Cook (born January 25, 1981), known by her stage name Alicia Keys, is an American R&B/soul singer, songwriter, pianist and actress. Keys was born in Manhattan, New York. She is the only child of Teresa, a paralegal and part-time actress, and Craig Cook, a flight attendant. Her father is African American and her mother is of Italian, Scottish, and Irish descent.

Keys was sent to music and dance classes by her mother. She studied classical piano from age seven, played works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin and enrolled in the Professional Performing Arts School at the age of 12, where she majored in choir and began writing songs at the age of 14. She graduated in four years as valedictorian at the age of 16.

Throughout her career, Keys has won 15 Grammy Awards and has sold over 35 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide. She is included in various top singer lists of all time and "100 Sexiest Artists" list.

She is an avid philanthropist collaborating with other famous musicians to raise money for various charities and causes that she outspokenly advocates.

In 2010, Keys married artist and producer, Swizz Beatz and soon afterward gave birth to their son. She is currently a mentor on the music talent competition show, The Voice.
