Major George Preddy is the world's top P-51 Mustang ace who is officially credited with 26.83 aerial victories plus five strafing victories. He was killed on Christmas Day 1944 when he was chasing an enemy aircraft over the Hurtgen Forest during the Battle of the Bulge. The FW 190 flew low over an American AA battery and gunners opened up on the enemy aircraft. They missed him but hit all three pursuing Mustangs. Preddy was the only one killed that day by 'friendly fire.' Bill Preddy, the younger brother, was also a P-51 fighter pilot who was killed by enemy AA fire on April 17, 1945, just a few days before WWII ended.
