Carly Elisabeth Simon (born June 25, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter, musician and children's author. Carly was born in New York City. Her father Richard L. Simon was co-founder of Simon & Schuster, and a pianist who often played Chopin and Beethoven at home.

Simon began stuttering severely when she was eight years old. Carly turned to singing and songwriting. "I felt so strangulated talking that I did the natural thing, which is to write songs because I could sing without stammering, as all stammerers can."

Simon was signed to Elektra Records in 1970, and released her debut album (Carly Simon) in March of 1971. Her next album (Anticipation) came in November of the same year. The lead single (also titled "Anticipation") became a big hit, reaching # 3 on Easy Listening radio and #13 on Billboard's Pop singles chart (It was used in world-wide commercials by the H. J. Heinz Company to sell their ketchup). The single was written in 15 minutes while Carly waited for Cat Stevens to pick her up for a date. In 1972–73 Simon scored the biggest success of her career with "You're So Vain". It hit #1 on the U.S. Pop and Adult Contemporary charts, and sold over a million copies in the United States alone.
