Harriet Quimby (1875-1912) was an early American aviator and movie screen writer. In 1911, she was awarded a U.S. pilot's certificate by the Aero Club of America, becoming the first woman to be issued a pilot's license in the United States. On April 16,1912, she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. She took off from Dover, England and landed in Calais, France about 59 minutes later. She only lived to the age of 37 but was a major influence for the role of women in aviation. In 1911, Harriet Quimby authored seven screenplays that were made into silent films by Biograph Studios, and had a small role in one of them. All seven of the films were directed by legendary director D.W. Griffith.
