Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show which later was shortened to just Dr Hook, was a 70s band playing southern, and soft rock. The band's 2 biggest hits "Sylvia's Mother" and "Cover of the Rolling Stone" were both produced in 1972.

The founders of the band were three Southerners, George Cummings, Ray Sawyer, and Billy Francis. These three musicians had previously been together in a band called "Chocolate Papers". Ray Sawyer who wears an eye patch from a car accident in 1967, was the inspiration for the Dr Hook name, along with the Peter Pan story. Although the band was mostly southerners, it was formed in New Jersey, and started performing on the East Coast. The band produced a gold album in 1979 but started coming apart in 1980 when Ray Sawyer quit.
