Nikola Tesla was born 10 July 1856, of Serbian nationality in Smiljan, the Austrian Empire. He had been trained in electrical and mechanical engineering and was one of the most influential inventors of the 20th century. He has been credited as the inspiration for radio, robots, and even radar and has been called the patron saint of modern electricity. He created the induction motor and alternating-current (AC) power transmission. He was at one time embroiled in a patent infringement suit with Marconi over the invention of the radio.

He is probably best known for invention of the Tesla coil, which is an electrical resonant transformer circuit used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high frequency alternating-current electricity. Tesla Motors was named as an homage to him.
