Yes, Edison invented DC current, and Tesla AC current, both of which we use far and wide today. Instead of joining forces with Tesla and enjoying mutual success, perhaps more with both of their brains working together, Edison's greed drove him to bury Tesla. It's a sad story indeed.

He was a very smart man who contributed greatly on our way of life today who died a pauper, too bad.

Mike Rota, Edison undermined Tesla because Tesla and George Westinghouse beat Edison out over the battle of the currents when the State of New York decided to use electrocution as the new way form of execution, replacing hanging. Edison experimented with his DC equipment by electrocution a pig and a calf. The History Channel did a program called Lawbreakers. One of the episodes is called 'The Chair'. It told the story behind this part of America's dark history. There is also a book titled Edison and the Elecrtic Chair by Mark Essie. The book goes into greater detail about these events; even Tesla's scientific decline.

I remember when they changed the electricity, I think from 25 watt to 50 watt. Not sure as I was very young. This was late 40s or early 50s, and every motor had to be changed free of charge, Fridges, washing machines, anything with a motor. I remember well because we had an ancient washing machine at our cottage and they came and put a brand new one in. It had been on it's last legs, but lasted a long time after that.

If Tesla was alive today, he would be astounded that we still use wire to transport current.

Between Edison and Westinghouse they both drove Tesla to insanity, one by technicality and one by greed.

William Laughlin, mostly the result of other scientists' work, that he took credit for - or at least filed the patents under his own name. Edison was truly the first technological robber-baron.

the trouble is that dc takes much larger wires to transmit the same wattage we would need wires the size around of basket balls to do the same thing as ac wires the size of a pea over distance the utility poles to go one mile will need to be massive to support the dc wires

Patrick Riggs, Except that in the beginning of his career, Tesla worked for Edison. Edison thought Tesla was brilliant and a engineering genius, and one to watch in the future. The problem began when Tesla invented alternating (A/C) current, and Edison invented direct current or D/C current. Edison wanted direct current to become the household standard. He waged a campaign to discredit Tesla's alternating current and lost, and Tesla took the alternating current to Edison rival Westinghouse. So Edison's ego came between the two men, especially when Tesla's alternating current technology became the standard, at least here in America. Who knows what Edison and Tesla might have done working together as co-inventors, rather than as the rivals they ultimately became.
