In the 1960s, Vicki sent a fan letter to Carol Burnett, along with a local newspaper article, that talked about how much she looked like Burnett. Burnett was so impressed, that she and her husband, drove to Inglewood, California, to see Lawrence perform at the Fireman's Ball. Lawrence was eventually called by CBS, to audition for a Variety Show that they were putting together. The executives didn't really care for her and wanted to audition a more professional actress, calling Lawrence "rough". Burnett wanted her for the show anyway, and told them, "Yes, she's a diamond in the rough." The show ran for 11 seasons, winning 25 Emmys and 8 Golden Globes. Lawrence also had a one-hit-wonder with the song, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". Released as a single in 1972, the song reached #1 on the Hot 100 chart in 1973.

Lawrence went on to star in the sitcom, "Mama's Family", a spin-off from "The Carol Burnett Show". "Mama's Family" ran from 1982-1984. Even though it only ran for two seasons, it would become the highest-rated sitcom in syndication.
