Who played gangster Al Capone, the rival to Eliot Ness, on the U.S. TV series "The Untouchables"?
The actor who played gangster Al Capone, the rival to Eliot Ness, on the U.S. TV series "The Untouchables" was Neville Brand. He played Capone twice on this show, in the pilot segment and in the double episode 'The Big Train'. Neville Brand's sinister face and gravelly voice were perfect for the tough-guy roles that he was able to play in movies and on television.
Neville Brand was born in Griswold, IA and was the oldest of seven children of Leo and Helen Brand. The 'Griswold American', a local newspaper in Iowa, noted that after serving in World War II as a decorated Army soldier, Brand was bitten by the acting bug while making Army training films. He later decided to use his GI Bill money to study drama with the American Theater Wing in New York.
He was next appearing on Broadway, and then the movies. He made his film debut as a sadistic henchman in the film noir "D.O.A." (1950). Other film roles followed: "Halls of Montezuma" (1950), "Stalag 17" (1953), "Love Me Tender" (1956), and "The Birdman of Alcatraz" in 1962.
He played Al Capone in "The George Raft Story" in 1961 and "Scarface Mob" in 1962 as well as in ABC television's "The Untouchables" (1959 - 1963).
