Tonto is a fictional character; he is the Native American (either Comanche or Potawatomi) companion of the Lone Ranger, a popular American Western character created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker. Tonto has appeared in radio and television series and other presentations of the characters' adventures righting wrongs in 19th century western United States.

Tonto made his first appearance on the 11th episode of the radio show 'The Lone Ranger' in 1933. Though he became well known as the Lone Ranger's friend, Tonto was originally created just so the Lone Ranger would have someone with whom to talk.

'The Lone Ranger' American Western drama television series aired on the ABC Television network from 1949 to 1957, with Clayton Moore in the starring role. Jay Silverheels, a member of the Mohawk Aboriginal people in Canada, played The Lone Ranger's Indian companion Tonto. 'The Lone Ranger' was the highest-rated television program on ABC in the early 1950s and its first true "hit". On the television series (and other adaptations) Tonto has had Scout for some time before he finds the Lone Ranger in Bryant's Gap. He was named Scout in the TV series, but was called White Feller in the early Lone Ranger novels.

Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, and Roy Rogers rode horses called Champion, Topper and Trigger respectively.
