After he had put his bold and now famous signature on the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock, the first to sign the document, reportedly said: "There! His Majesty can now read my name without glasses. And he can double the reward on my head!". Also, Hancock added, "We must be unanimous; there must be no pulling different ways; we must hang together."

It was clear that by signing the Declaration of Independence, which was fairly engrossed on parchment, with the title and stile [sic] of 'The unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America', the members of the Continental Congress were directly saying that they were representatives from states that had the right to wage war against Great Britain, trade anyway they liked, and could create their own laws.

There would be a new government, which would become the United States of America. This government would be for the people and by the people, different from any other governments modern history had seen.

On July 4, 1776, church bells rang out to celebrate the day the Declaration of Independence was accepted and subsequently signed. The country, which is the United States of America, was then officially born.
