Who was born as Henry McCarty?

Billy the Kid, born as Henry McCarty and also known as William Bonney, was an American old west gunfighter. He was known to have killed 8 men.

His first arrest was for stealing food in 1875, and within 5 months he was again arrested for stealing clothing and firearms. His escape from jail 2 days later made him both an outlaw and a federal fugitive. After murdering a blacksmith during an altercation in August 1877 in the Arizona territory he returned to New Mexico, joining a band of cattle rustlers. He became a well- known figure in the territory when he joined "The Regulators" (a group of small ranch owners and cowboys). In April of 1878 he and 2 others were charged with murdering 3 men, including a county sheriff. He was ultimately caught in December 1880 by Sheriff Pat Garrett, tried and convicted of murdering the sheriff and sentenced to hang. Once again he escaped from jail, but was shot and killed by Sheriff Garrett a couple of months later.
