His bestseller Hughes: The Private Diaries, Memos and Letters was released on September 11, 2001. Hack was being interviewed live on the Today show by Matt Lauer when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, and Matt consequently had to cut short the interview to report on the ongoing events. The abrupt ending of their interview and the early reports of the attack from the Today show, is shown in a continuous loop, as part of an exhibit in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City.

I was at work at a School District in suburban NY, 40 minutes outside NYC. Was listening to Imus on the radio, as I did daily. I lived on the Hudson River and when I finally went home that evening, as we were in "lockdown" all day, I could see the smoke over the City. A terrible day for our Country.

I was on the highway driving to work and listening to the morning local news. I was about ten minutes away from the office when the first plane hit. It was only one idea out of several that it was a terrorist.
