Franz Von Werra was a German POW who tried on numerous occasions to escape from POW camp in the UK and return to the action. The fighter pilot's attempts to escape were so often that he was eventually transferred from Great Britain to Canada to stop him getting back to the war. He jumped off of a prison transport train in Canada made his way to the United States, contacted the German consulate and then he went through South America to Spain and then Germany. He was greeted as a hero by Hitler and then returned to combat as a fighter pilot. He was the only Canadian held POW to escape and return to action during the conflict. He was later killed in action.
