Grace Murray Hopper (Grace Hopper) was the inventor of COBOL as a computer language. Born in 1906, Hopper became an American computer scientist and a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral. She was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer in 1944, and she invented the first compiler for a computer programming language. She was a person who popularized the idea of machine independent programming languages which led to the development of COBOL, one of the very first high level programming languages.

She served in the U.S. Navy almost her entire life. She finally retired in 1986; it was at the age of 79. But, Admiral Hopper was then hired as a senior consultant to Digital Equipment Corporation, a position she retained until her death in 1992 at age 85.
