Who was the first Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court?

John Jay was one of the key Founding Fathers of the US. He was born on the 23rd of December, 1745 in New York City and became a respectful lawyer, who called for property rights protection.

Jay made a large contribution to the establishment of the US government and ratification of the Constitution, as he was one of the authors of five of The Federalist Papers. When the government under the Constitution began in 1789, Jay became the first Chief Justice of the United States and served until 1795.

History was far from my favorite subject in high school 66 years ago, but my favorite teacher of all, Ed Winberg, taught U.S. History. T⁸hat had to be where I learned about John Jay.

Learned this in American History class in high school but more recently his name was brought up many times durning John Roberts selection to the court.

The history behind John Jay, being chosen by President George Washington to become the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was a second choice by the President. He was offered the Secretary of the Treasury first before turning down that position.
