Lynyrd Skynyrd is a southern rock band formed in Jacksonville. Florida (USA) in 1964. Ronnie Van Zant was the lead vocalist, Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar) and Bob Burns (drums). At the height of their fame during the 1970s, the band popularized the Southern rock genre with songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird".

The band abruptly ceased when Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in an airplane crash on October 20, 1977, but reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie's brother, Johnny Van Zant, as its lead vocalist.

Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour and record with co-founder Rossington (being the band's sole continuous member).

Donald "Donnie" Newton Van Zant (born June 11, 1952) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for being a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013. He is the middle of three sons Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny Van Zant.

Jimmie Van Zant (1956-2016) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was the cousin of Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny Van Zant.
