Who was the first non-human to win an Academy Award?
Walt Disney won the first of his many Academy Awards for the creation of Mickey Mouse in 1932. The news media at the time called Mickey Mouse the "first non-human" to win an Oscar. The Oscar was given to Walt Disney as an Academy Honorary Award for his creation of Mickey Mouse. People were not surprised that Disney won this Oscar; he definitely deserved it. Love him or hate him, Mickey Mouse has become one of the most iconic characters in animation film and TV history. He is truly considered in a class by himself.
Almost ten years later, in the animated short film "Lend a Paw" (1941), which was largely a remake of the 1933 short "Mickey's Pal Pluto", Pluto saves the life of a kitten, and later feels jealous towards the kitten after Mickey Mouse takes the kitten in. This film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 14th Academy Awards in 1942, the only Mickey Mouse short to win the award.
Some film makers seem to always ask, "If Mickey Mouse had never been created, would the use of animation ever have evolved within the motion picture industry? Would Donald Duck and Goofy ever have come into play?" They were always tagging along when most movies with Mickey appeared. It was only the inspiration for Mickey Mouse that caused these characters (and others) to be created. All main character even Mickey needed and still needs a good supporting cast."
