At the February 2013 Oscars ceremony, Adele performed the namesake song of Sam Mendes’ 2012 James Bond film, “Skyfall”, the 22nd movie in the film franchise. Adele, her co-songwriter Paul Epworth, and the song also took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song that night.

Choking back tears, Adele thanked her co-writer and producer, Paul Epworth for "believing in me all the time", then paid tribute to her husband Simon Konecki, who she called "my man". In their acceptance speech Epworth thanked Adele for “being the best person I’ve ever worked with. She’s absolutely amazing.”

It took a long time - half a century - for a Bond theme song to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The first official Bond theme song (although not the first Bond film) was “From Russia with Love”, which was recorded by Matt Monro for the 1963 film of the same name.

Prior to “Skyfall” only three other Bond theme songs had received Oscar nominations: “Live and Let Die,” (1973) written by Paul and Linda McCartney and performed by their band Wings; “Nobody Does It Better” (1977) composed by Marvin Hamlisch with lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and sung by Carly Simon; and “For Your Eyes Only” (1981) written by Bill Conti and Mick Leeson, and performed by Sheena Easton.

The other nominees in the 2013 best song category were “Before My Time”; “Everybody Needs a Best Friend”; “Pi's Lullaby”; and “Suddenly”.
