On the occasion of Zimbabwe's independence from Britain in 1980, Robert Mugabe became Prime Minister whilst the Rev. Canaan Sodindo Banana was installed as President. In 1987, Mugabe became executive president, a post he still holds. Banana was later jailed. The 92-year-old Mugabe has been in power continuously for 36 years and is said to be the world's oldest head of state.

Bishop Abel Muzorewa was briefly Prime Minister of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia in 1979 in a failed political experiment. General Solomon Mujuru was a leading figure in the war to bring Mugabe to power and his wife Joyce served as a Vice-President of Zimbabwe.
