President William Howard Taft started the American tradition of Major League Baseball (MLB) Presidential first pitches in 1910 at Griffith Stadium, Washington, D.C., on the Washington Senators' Opening Day. Every President since Taft has thrown out at least one ceremonial first ball or pitch, either for Opening Day, the All-Star Game, or the World Series, usually with much fanfare.

Donald Trump opted to decline the Washington Nationals' invitation to throw the ceremonial first pitch in 2017. Trump is the first President to decline an invitation since the tradition began with Taft's first pitch in 1910.
